The Language Institute is collaborating with the Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures (CLLC) at Ohio State University to offer 12 UW–Madison language instructors the opportunity to participate at no cost in the OSU CLLC non-credit professional development certificate program:

AI in World Language Education: A Non-Credit Certificate Program through The Ohio State University Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Dates: July 1, 2026 – January 10, 2027

Program components:

  • Online asynchronous course. Approx. 12-16 hours to complete. Access opens July 1, 2026. The online course must be completed before the live, 2-hour zoom workshop on August 10 or September 18.
  • Live, 2-hour zoom workshop, Evidence, Examples, and a Ready-to-Use Toolkit: Using Artificial Intelligence to Create Task-Based LanguageTeaching Instructional Materials. Attend one:
    • 4:00-6:00 pm central, Monday, August 10, 2026
    • 4:00-6:00 pm central, Friday, September 18, 2026
  • Summary essay (3-5 pages): Due by January 10, 2027

What you will learn:

  • Foundations of AI in the context of language teaching and learning
  • Ethical AI use considerations
  • AI-partnered pedagogical approaches
  • How to experiment with AI tools, including how to build and test AI chatbots

Eligibility: Up to 10 UW–Madison graduate students or faculty who teach a language other than English.

Important notes:

  • The Language Institute and CLLC are offering this opportunity for language instructors interested in critically exploring AI in the context of language teaching and learning. We are not advocating for its use.
  • Participants must commit to completing all program components to receive the OSU CLLC badge.
  • AI capabilities vary significantly across languages.
