The federally funded Wisconsin Language Roadmap Initiative (2017-19) aimed to enhance the economic competitiveness and vitality of the State of Wisconsin by strengthening and promoting world language education for Wisconsin students at all levels, K-16, and by raising awareness about the importance of second language proficiency and intercultural competencies as they relate to the current and future economic competitiveness of the State.
A major outcome of the initiative was the Wisconsin Language Roadmap, which included strategic goals and core recommendations address the pressing challenges in world language education in the state today and pave the way to a world-ready Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Language Roadmap was prepared by working groups formed following a statewide Language Summit in 2018. Materials prepared for Summit participants included a report on Wisconsin’s Language Landscape.
The Wisconsin Language Roadmap Initiative was sponsored by The Language Flagship of the National Security Education Program in the U.S. Department of Defense, with substantial support from the University of Wisconsin–Madison Language Institute, International Division and College of Letters & Science, and in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
