Language Teaching Pedagogy Grant for UW-Madison Graduate Students

The Language Institute is pleased to announce a small grants program to defray or fully cover the cost of participating in a Spring-Summer 2023 workshop or institute focused on language teaching and learning. Grant recipients will be expected to share what they learned at the workshop with their home program and/or the broader community.

GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE                 
The deadline was Friday, March 3, 2023

DATES
The workshop or institute must take place between January 1, 2023 and August 31, 2023.

ANTICIPATED NUMBER OF AWARDS
The Language Institute anticipates being able to make a small number of awards of up to $500.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be Teaching Assistants (teaching a language course) and/or graduate students in good standing enrolled in a UW-Madison graduate program in one of the following departments:

  • African Cultural Studies
  • Asian Languages and Cultures
  • Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
  • French & Italian
  • German, Nordic, and Slavic+
  • Language Sciences
  • Second Language Acquisition
  • Spanish & Portuguese

Students do not have to be teaching a language course this semester to be eligible for the grant.

ELIGIBLE WORKSHOPS AND SUMMER INSTITUTES
There are many online workshops and institutes for language instructors offered through different institutions and professional organizations such as the CARLA Institutes for Language Teachers.

Check with Jana Martin if you’re not sure if a  workshop or institute that you’re interested in would qualify for this grant program.

ALLOWABLE EXPENSES
This grant is intended to cover the cost of registration for workshops or institutes focused on language teaching and learning. The grant is not intended for conference registration or membership fees in professional organizations.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Applications will be reviewed by a committee as soon as possible after the application deadline. The committee will consider the following in reviewing applications and making decisions on awards:

  • Need for support, with priority consideration given to applications from graduate students who do not have access to other sources of funding that they could use to participate in a workshop or institute for language instructors
  • Potential for impact on the student’s teaching and professional development
  • Plan for sharing experiences at the workshop with others
  • Fit of the focus of the online workshop or institute with the purpose of the grant
  • Overall quality of the application
