Interdepartmental Orientation Workshop for New Language Instructors – 2019

The interdepartmental orientation workshop aims to give beginning language instructors a basic understanding of the principles and methods of effective language teaching and lesson design. The workshop consists of two parts: Day 1 – a demonstration lesson and a guided discussion led by faculty from sponsoring departments; and Day 2 – “microteaching” in mixed-language groups, an opportunity for new instructors to apply in practice the principles and methods covered in the large-group session.

Peer Micro-Teaching in Cross-Language Groups

The goal of micro-teaching is to give new instructors the chance to teach in front of, and receive constructive feedback from, colleagues who are in the same situation as they are. Micro-teaching provides new instructors with ideas for lesson plans and in-class activities, and makes new instructors aware of the tensions and difficulties encountered by students when they are first learning a language.

Workshop participants are assigned to a small group of 5-6 new instructors. Each group is typically facilitated by faculty and an experienced TA. New instructors will teach a 10-minute micro-lesson in the language that they are teaching in the fall, while the remaining instructors in the group will act as students. Each micro-lesson will be evaluated by peer-students through their written comments noting strong points of the lesson and suggestions for improvement, followed by a brief group discussion. After all micro-lessons, new instructors will have the opportunity to discuss more general teaching-related issues with the faculty and experienced TA/instructor.

Micro-teaching group and room assignments are posted below and will be posted in room 114 on the day 1 of the orientation workshop. See or contact Jana Martin (jcmartin4@wisc.edu)  if you have not yet been assigned to a group.
