The Language Institute, with language centers and institutes at Michigan State University, the University of Iowa, University of Michigan, and University of Minnesota, and with funding from the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Letters and Science Deans, hosted the inaugural 2024 Big Ten Academic Alliance Language Education Summit on October 24-Friday, October 25, 2024 at the Big Ten Conference Center, Rosemont, Illinois.
Participation in the Summit was invitation-only, with two representatives from each Big Ten Academic Alliance institution, and leaders in K-12 language education in states in which BTAA institutions are located. University participants were either leaders of language centers or institutes, or other leaders in language education and research on campus.
The BTAA Language Education Summit addressed the following core questions:
- How can language centers and institutes at BTAA universities, in partnership with state-level K-12 world language leadership, advance language education and research?
- What are new forms of collaboration to strengthen language education that Big Ten universities and K-12 educators might engage in?
Following the Summit, working groups will focus on advancing several collaborative initiatives that emerged as priorities for Summit participants.
