World Languages Day at the University of Wisconsin - Madison

A Look Back: World Cinema Day 2007

Wisconsin high school students and teachers attended an educational screening of the Indonesian film Of Love and Eggs (directed by Garin Nugroho) as part of World Cinema Day on April 13, 2007.

During the brief introduction, UW-Madison Professor Ellen Rafferty (Chair of the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia) gave a presentation on the geography and demographics of Indonesia. Afterwards, Prof. Rafferty led a lively 30-minute discussion along with special guests from Indonesia.

In order to incorporate the film into their curricula, teachers were provided a discussion guide for Of Love and Eggs in advance of the screening.

Some comments from participating high school students

  • I really enjoyed watching the Indonesian film; it was interesting watching a movie about a completely different culture. I had never heard the Indonesian language before so it was interesting to hear it spoken.

  • I thought it was interesting having a World Cinema Day. It's a great way to show other cultures.
