Interactive Workshop for Language Instructors: Mind the Gap: Building Independent Study Skills in the Language Classroom

Date:
Fri, 10/14/2016 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm
Location:
1418 Van Hise Hall
Speaker and Affiliation:
Peter Glanville, University of Maryland

Too often, a skill gap develops among students in the same class, one that gets wider as students move through an academic program. This workshop presents a model for providing language learners with independent study skills that enable them to get the most from their language program. The model trains learners to exploit texts for language gain, to notice new language, and to incorporate it into their linguistic production. The workshop consists of a talk, a short discussion, and activities that show the model in action. Participants in the workshop will leave with practical ideas for in-class and out-of-class activities that allow all students to continue learning as they move through a program and onward past graduation.
