Beyond the Accent
A foreign accent immediately identifies a speaker as nonnative. Although many L2 learners would like to get rid of their accents, much of the research shows that only the most exceptional adult L2 learners are able to pass for native speakers. The goal of this talk is to encourage a more nuanced view of pronunciation that takes into account the extent to which listeners are able to understand L2 speech. Although examples will come from German, French, and English, this talk will be relevant for a linguistically diverse audience.
