Language for Life: Languages and Law
A Look Back

4:00 pm, Thursday, February 26, 2009
Location: Memorial Union

Language for Life is a program of the Language Institute that gives current students the opportunity to meet with alumni and other working professionals who studied a foreign language and are using that language in their professional or personal lives in inspiring ways.

We would like to thank our panelists, Carmel Capati, Erik Ibele, and David Miller, who generously gave their time in sharing their experiences and expertise:

Carmel Capati

Carmel Capati is an attorney who serves as Manager for the Court Interpreter Program with the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s Director of State Courts office since December 2003.  Ms. Capati speaks Tagalog (Filipino) and Spanish.

In her presentation, Ms Capati focused on the need for high-level interpreters in Wisconsin courts.

Erik Ibele

Erik W. Ibele is a Madison-based attorney with the firm Neider & Boucher. He speaks German and Pashtu.

Mr. Ibele presentation focused on the niche he has made for himself as a transactional lawyer specializing in business with German companies.

David Miller

David E. Miller currently works as an attorney for the Law Office of Michael C. Rakower in New York City.  He has worked in Moscow as an attorney and speaks French, Hebrew and Russian.

Mr. Miller's talk focused on his decision to go to law school as a way to realize his international interests and language skills.
