Abstract
The field of second language acquisition is at a crossroads after many years of exponentially more serious research. The field began with a heavy reliance on the field of linguistics, but in the past few decades has grown away from that exclusive attachment, branching out and incorporating insights from other fields, namely psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics. This has had its benefits, but has also served to fragment the field. This paper will address some of these concerns, focusing on a recent arrival to the field of SLA, the concept of attention. I will report on two recent studies in which I address issues of attention, connecting it to linguistic issues in one case and research on acquisition in a pedagogical context in another.
