Interdisciplinary Interest Circles
Call for Proposals
Deadline for receipt of proposals: October 15
The Language Institute invites proposals for interdisciplinary interest circles on topics related to the study of language, literature or culture.
The goal of the circles is to provide a forum for exploring new ideas and sharing perspectives and approaches. We also aim to foster collaboration among faculty and students from the many departments and programs on campus that conduct research or provide instruction in world languages, literatures and cultures. We hope that successful circles will lead to other collaborative efforts such as instructional innovation, research projects, or academic talks or conferences.
Criteria
The interest circles must be based on a topic that crosses traditional academic disciplines and/or departments, and involve 5-6 faculty members from at least 3 departments. The proposal must be submitted by a UW-Madison faculty member, who agrees to serve as faculty coordinator. Graduate or undergraduate students may also participate in the circle, in addition to at least 5 faculty or academic staff.
Award
An award in the amount of $2,500 will be transferred to faculty coordinator's department for materials and supplies. The award will be transferred in the Fall 2006. The circle must start in the Fall 2006 and continue throughout the 2006-07 academic year.
The faculty coordinator agrees to organize and lead the circle. This includes setting reading or discussion lists, organizing meetings, and leading discussions (or assigning these tasks to others in the circle, as appropriate). The faculty coordinator agrees to provide a brief report to the Language Institute Director, Professor Sally Sieloff Magnan, at end of each semester of the
2006-07 academic year.
Proposal
The proposal consists of a brief, 2-3 page narrative that describes the topic and argues for its importance. It should address how the circle might lead to other projects. The proposal must include the names and departments of all interest circle participants, who must agree in advance to participate. The proposal should be submitted to Language Institute Director Sally Sieloff Magnan, 1322 Van Hise Hall, no later than October 15.
