Language and Cultural Identity: Dialects of American English
Presenter: Joan Houston Hall, Chief Editor, Dictionary of American Regional English
Time: 12:00 pm, Wednesday, March 16
Description: Despite the popular notion that the media and the mobility of the American population are "homogenizing" American English, there are still thousands of differences in words, phrases, grammatical constructions, and pronunciations from one part of our country to another. These differences both set us apart from others and bind us closely to those in our communities. Learn how these aspects of language and culture are being documented in the Dictionary of American Regional English (or DARE).
