Welcome to the UW-Madison Language Institute
Inaugurated on April 29, 2004, the Language Institute's mission is to promote promotes collaboration for research, education and community outreach in languages, literatures and cultures. Following this mission, it spearheads efforts to support instruction and curricular innovation, conducts and supports research that supports the teaching and learning mission of the College and the many departments in which languages are taught, and provides information about the wealth of educational opportunities offered by UW-Madison to the campus, Wisconsin K-12 schools, and the Wisconsin business and community. The Language Institute is also the home of the interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition, which provides support to research efforts of the Institute.
The Language Institute is an initiative of the College of Letters and Science, with substantial support from the Division of International Studies. The Institute benefits from the insights and efforts of many colleagues, especially those on its advisory committee.
Along with Dr. Dianna Murphy, Associate Director, and Wendy Johnson, Outreach Coordinator, I wish you a productive and stimulating academic year. We hope this website will be your first virtual stop for connecting through UW-Madison to the world of languages and to the many doors that multilingualism opens. Your feedback is appreciated: ssmagnan@wisc.edu.
